Jan 20 2008, 9:23 AM EST
Hi...If anyone would like to share teaching ideas here..I'm all about that...Just for reference, one teaching idea that created alot of discussion in class was about a pregnant woman who was laid off after it became known, in the company, that she was pregnant. If you'd like to know more....you're welcome to drop by.

I'd like to share an idea: introduce some of T Yoon Mi Rae's music to a class, e.g. http://gongsin.com/zbxe/?document_srl=756145 and explore with them what might be going on. This isn't k-pop with a line of english in the chorus, this is something else, a hybriding?I wonder if a discussion of 윤미래's 'identity' might focus some critical attention on the 'blood and soil' essentialism taught in the national curriculum, and help point a way out? Her music might even help lower affective barriers to language learning: monolingual pride, and cultural anxiety ... Do you find this valuable? |

Interesting.....I've seen a few K bands on EBS recently that use both languages. I suppose it depends on what you want to say maybe one language is 'better' than the other. What does she use English for? To say what? I noticed this phenomenon in Japan too particularly punkish rebellion type music;English is more direct maybe?

5. English, directed at ..?

I'm not sure what she's doing. Apparently she grew up in LA with a Korean mother and an African American father so she might be celebrating the cultural traditions she identifies with, while at the same time be performing something new. Linguists would say that her rhymes are code-switching but maybe code-blending is more apt?Heh I just remembered, LMB says that we must TEE (Teach English through English). There is to be no linguistic blending in the classroom! This makes perfect ideological sense, given that Korea is officially a culturally and ethnically Pure (sorry, 'Homogeneous') Nation. Anyway, it's interesting that this is happening not only in hip hop but in punk too. I doubt that 'globalization' (of the Washington Consensus variety at least) is being celebrated. What's going on?
